Thousands of supporters of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro violently stormed the presidential palace, Congress, and the Supreme Court building in the nation’s capital Brasilia, reportedly motivated by false claims of voter fraud in last year’s election that saw Bolsonaro lose to the current president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Multiple journalists have reportedly been attacked in the violence. The president has called the attackers “fanatic fascists” and promised they would be punished. As the attacks unfolded on January 78, American far-right figures immediately jumped to defend and justify the violence. There have long been close ties between the Brazilian right and the American far-right, with some of the latter even echoing false claims about Brazil’s 2022 election.
